Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
