The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
